Sneeze Count 2018

Is Christmas the most wonderful time of the year? NO. The most wonderful time of the year is right now because I am sharing my much anticipated annual Sneeze Count. 2018 marks my sixth year of counting, and I am so proud of myself. If you’re new to this blog, you can catch up on my previous sneezy years that I blogged about here: 2017, 2016, 2015.

Alright, so 2018’s sneeze count was 364 days long, and I sneezed 2155 times. This is my second lowest year, but it’s only a couple hundred from my third lowest. I did not hit a new maximum, but I did hit a new minimum by one. Overall, though, a decent year. Behold my chart in all its glory!

The 2018 sneeze chart.

There’s not a lot to unpack here, as it’s pretty clear on its own, but I do want to talk about a few things. That big week in May was when my family went to New York City for a few days. I’d like to say that America makes me sneezy, but I pulled up 2014’s chart because I also went to NYC for a few days also in May, and there wasn’t any unusual activity at that time.

It’s also worth noting that in mid-July, I got a full-time job, so nine hours of my days since have been spent in an office. It’s not a remarkably dusty place like the book warehouse I used to work in, but it’s not a stellar shrine of cleanliness by any means.

Another thing that happened in the back half of the year was that my neighbours got a cat. The cat’s name is Dirk and I love him even though he only loves me back when he’s lonely. I don’t see Dirk too often, but when I do, he definitely brings out some sneezes. That big spike in October is almost exclusively from Dirk because that week my parents and my neighbours went on a trip, leaving me and their daughter home, so the two of us (three if you count the furball) hung out a lot at their house. The many hours over several days led to many sneezes, and by Sunday I felt like I had asthma again, but I had no regrets.

Going forward, I’m going to try and make some notes during anomaly weeks. I don’t remember why that week in February was so high, and I wish I did. So in 2019 and beyond, I will do better.

And to close out this post, I wanted to share some other stats. I’ve compared my sneezes to the two other people who ever dared to count as well, but I still wanted to know how I compared to others. How many times does the average person sneeze in a day? A month? A year? I found one study (well, the abstract of a study. I’m not paying for more) that said the average person sneezes 4 times a day. As you can see from my chart above, I calculate an average every year, and my averages, and I’m always higher than 4. A few years had been at around 9 per day. I also found one source that estimated how much time the average person will spend sneezing in their lifetime. It used a daily average of 1.2 sneezes and a lifespan of 78.8 years to conclude that you’d spend over 5 straight hours sneezing. Given that 1.2 sneezes a day is weak for me, I’m looking at closer to 12 or 13 hours of sneezing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my 2018 sneeze count and the facts I’ve shared. Counting sneezes is my dumbest hobby but perhaps my favourite.

That’s all for now!

Monthly Look Ahead: December 2018

Ho Ho Ho-ly cow, it’s already December! Can you believe the year is almost over? A lot of people online are expressing their shock that the year seemed unusually long, and I feel that. Though, for me, I think this is accentuated by the fact that my life has changed a lot in the past year. In January I was away at school and editing a novel. Now I’m back home and working full time and getting rejections from lit agents. Anyway, before the year is over, I still have December to look forward to. And by now you should that I love Christmas, so I think this month will be a good one. Here’s what I’ve got going on:

  • I very much enjoyed season one of Marvel’s Runaways, so I am very excited for season two on the 21st.
  • On the 18th, Ellen Degeneres’s Netflix comedy special is coming out, and I am very interested to see that. I love Ellen, and I think she’s funny, but being funny on a talk show and being stand-up comedy funny are different things. She’s done stand-up before, but it’s been a while. I have faith, though.
  • As it is every year, the Arrowverse is doing a big crossover. Though Legends is not a part of it this year, there’ll still be more than enough characters to deliver a wild story. All the pictures I’ve seen of Barry as Oliver and Oliver as Barry have me super ready for it. Plus Clark and Lois and Batwoman? The hype is real.
  • Aquaman is hitting theaters on the 21st, and early reviews seem alright. The trailer looked good actually (aside from Mera’s silly hair. It’s so dumb-looking).

  • In October, Team Starkid had a new show called The Guy Who Hated Musicals and I thiiiink it’ll be on YouTube this month (or so a Tweet from Nick Lang said). I can’t wait to see it because Starkid’s content is almost always funny and entertaining.
  • Mary Poppins Returns and Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse are two movies I want to see at some point but am not dying to see. They’re obviously out this month, so if a friend wants to see one, I’ll go, but otherwise I’ll watch them eventually.
  • Christmas, obviously. Though we don’t know what our plans are yet. Gotta love that.
  • My mom and I haven’t started baking any Christmas cookies, so we gotta get on that.

Aaaand that’s my December. What do you have going on this last month? Make your own MLA post and share!

That’s all for now!

Monthly Look Ahead: November 2018

Here we are in month 11 of 12. It is now colder. Days are shorter. But this November has a few fun things on the horizon and you’re gonna hear about it now. Monthly Look Ahead time! Feel free to make your own MLA post too. They’re really good at helping me plan out the month. My November includes:

  • Christmas music! I listen to the radio basically all day at work so I am very excited to have beloved Christmas jams going. I’d like to be able to hold out until late in the month like a normal person but I am weak and will likely have it one way too soon.
  • On November 2nd, PBS is airing a pro shot recording of An American In Paris. I don’t know much about the show but it’s a musical, and who am I to turn down free musicals?
  • The last season of Canadian show Mr. D starts on the 7th. Honestly, the past few seasons of this show haven’t been great, but this is the last season so I’ll keep watching, hopefully to see some nice closure for the characters I’ve come to enjoy over the past nine years. Besides, Canadian Gods Tessa and Scott are going to be on one of the episodes!
  • Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them: The Crimes Of Grindelwald is out on the 16th, and I am very excited. I adored the first movie, and I’m ready to go back to the magic. Hopefully I go see it with some old Quidditch pals, but I don’t know if we can get coordinated enough for that.

  • Speaking of Quidditch, there’s a Muggle Quidditch tournament near me one weekend, so I want to go watch some of it. Maybe I can convince my parents to come so they can see the sport in real life.
  • I think cheesy Christmas movies also start this month, and I want to watch as many as I can because I love the holiday sweetness.
  • Some friends of mine are going to Australia for a year and before they depart, they’re having a going away party, which will probably be fun. As I joked to a friend, if I don’t go, who will be Party Mom?

And that’s my November. Since all my blog posts in October were on YouTube (did y’all like those posts?), I didn’t want to post anything else unrelated. Now my series is done so I have complete freedom again, so I’m looking forward to writing up some new posts, returning to my regular random content. So see you guys then!

That’s all for now!

P.S. Since it is Halloween today, you should see the pumpkin I carved. The main attraction is a dragon, but I was inspired to add a little something extra to the side!

(I had to brighten the bean picture a little because the blue light was making it look weird and hard to see because it is really thin, but still, I am very proud!)

Monthly Look Ahead: January 2018

2018! We’ve made it to 2018! I hope this new year is a good one for all of us! And let’s start the new year off by looking ahead to this month and the good things to come! If you’re looking to start doing MLAs on your blog too, now is a great time to jump in! Here’s what’s happening in my January.

monthly look ahead logo

  • Midseason premieres of all my shows
  • And the season premiere of Black Lightning. This show seems different from the current DC shows because the hero is older and retired, so we’ll see how it goes!
  • The Quidditch team is having a Yule Ball again in which we dress up and eat food. Good times basically guaranteed.
  • The start of my last ever school semester! I’m almost freeeee!
  • The Golden Globes on the 7th
  • Novel editing. I didn’t do any in December (oops? In my defense I was waiting for more beta feedback…) so now I gotta do it in January before the bookmaking class I’m in gets too deep. I still don’t love editing but I have a few rewrite ideas I’m kind of excited about.

Okay, so not much going on, but that’s okay. It’s a new year of growth and change, and I am ready! I’m not really one for new year’s resolutions, but this year I’m going to (hopefully) continue working on my positivity. What are your resolutions and what do you have going on this month?
