2016/17 TV Upfront Trailers

I wasn’t going to do a post on this. I mean, I don’t expect people to watch every new trailer. But then I did and then I had thoughts and opinions and, well, here we are!

TV Upfronts

Last week were the Upfronts and even though news of cancellations and renewals were already out (#RIPAgentCarter) I was still excited to see pictures and the new trailers and get the channel schedules…Don’t judge me, but I kind of plan my University courses around TV shows. Anyways, there are a bunch of new shows coming and though I know I really shouldn’t commit myself to new shows as I already watch a lot, I like to know what’s out there, so I watched all the trailers. There are some winners…and some losers. And several shows that don’t interest me. But nevertheless, here they are for your viewing pleasure! For space reasons, I put the video link rather than embedding the video, but the links should open in a new tab, so click away!

NBC

The Good Place (starring Kristen Bell) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMf24rEsMOs (Airing Thursday 8:30) While this show doesn’t look great, it’s from the mind of Mike Schur, who I’ve already claimed my respect for, so I’ll definitely be giving this show a shot.

Timeless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4glJzvUunOE (Airing Monday 10:00) There are a few time travel shows coming this fall, and this is probably the best one. I probably won’t watch it, but if it gets good reviews, I may consider it. Between The Flash and Legends Of Tomorrow, I already have a fill of confusing time shows!

This Is Us (starring Mandy Moore) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfUiKg28r_M (Airing Tuesday 9:00) This looks cute, in a quirky, relatable way. The trailer has a sad vibe, though, and I hope the show isn’t always like that. I want to feel good!

Powerless (starring Vanessa Hudgens) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGC6x2mc_W8 (Airing Midseason) DC comics has yet another show, though never on this network. So if you know me at all you know I’m definitely into this. DC is pretty good with humor when they want to be, so I have high hopes, and I like Vanessa Hudgens.

 ABC

Designated Survivor (starring Keifer Sutherland) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_f1v0Nx5Sw (Airing Wednesday 10:00) Politics. Vaguely interesting idea but as a Canadian, I care very little for American political dramas.

Speechless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u55WK6AbaM (Airing Wednesday 8:30) This is really neat. I think that kid really is disabled, it’s not acting, and that’s really cool to have on TV. I think this show has a lot of potential as it looks heartfelt but funny as well. I may tune in to this.

American Housewife https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9JRoZsnINw (Airing Tuesday 8:30) This show isn’t gonna last. I mean, it’s fine for this lady to feel insecure around people who are thinner, but this lady is not fat. Weight and body standards are a big issue today and I don’t think people want to watch this not fat lady complain.

Conviction (starring Hayley Atwell) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJqg6J4JeLg (Airing Monday 10:00) I love Hayley but dangit, it’s hard for me to love this show knowing that I can’t also watch Agent Carter. My love for Hayley may however win out and I may give this show a shot. This trailer does look a little cliché, so perhaps I’ll wait to read reviews… This character seems to be the opposite of our beloved Peggy!

Time After Time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN4C4Ar5BLo (Airing Midseason) Time Travel show #2. I don’t understand why someone would watch this when you can watch Legends Of Tomorrow, though. Pass.

Imaginary Mary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15vywGIjvPk (Airing Midseason) Ummmmm No. Like, what is that thing?

Downward Dog https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3_bDWTTLWc (Airing Midseason) I’m sorry, THIS got picked up but Marvel’s Most Wanted didn’t? THIS? Ugh. I don’t even understand the plot! Cancel this now.

Notorious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZBP6wb3xmI (Airing Thursday 9:00) Ehhhhh doesn’t interest me at all but it’ll survive. Drama always wins out.

Still Star Crossed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o3Li_K3v2M (Airing Midseason) Personally, I’m a little done with Shakespeare and this story in particular, but it’s a Shonda Rhimes show and it stars black people, so it’ll survive, though I predict it’ll be the worst of the Shonda set.

CBS

MacGyver https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJHPUWLqEDE (Airing Friday 8:00) This dude has nicer hair than me. I’m not really into it but I can see how some people may be, especially since it’s a reboot of some movie I never saw.

Pure Genius https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFR75kb3MM4 (Airing Thursday 8:oo at the end of October due to football) Okay, so this looks kind of cool, but I don’t think I’m going to watch. Honestly, it seems too technical, both technologically and medically.

Bull https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly_8LKa5-PA (Airing Tuesday 9:00) While this is a slightly new twist on a law show, it is still just a law show. I can’t see how this will maintain interest over episodes but whatever.

Training Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NBd_zitSNI (Airing Midseason) Another reboot. No thanks. And I’m not just saying that because it’s a reboot, but because it looks boring.

Star Trek https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaVWIVOdUSQ (Airing Midseason) Not much of a trailer yet, but since I’ve kinda never seen a Star Trek movie or episode, I don’t have an interest in this.

Man With A Plan (starring Matt Leblanc) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJwPOAnvp7g (Airing Monday 8:30 in October) This doesn’t look too bad, but it’s the typical dopey dad stuff. Why are TV fathers unable to do anything in their own houses? I read that Jenna Fischer was supposed to play the mom but they recast, which is too bad because I would have loved to see her in this. This show has potential but I think it’s just because of Matt Leblanc. He’s likable.

Kevin Can Wait (starring Kevin James) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGaIvCLm9pE (Airing Monday 8:30) I, too, can wait…to see this show. I’ve never really liked Kevin James and this show just seems boring and silly.

The Great Indoors (starring Joel McHale) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd0pJ5araUU (Airing Thursday 8:00 after October) Okay is no one going to mention how that HR lady looks like Annie 2.0 and this is probably just another weird Community episode? That being said, this show doesn’t look awful. Kind of amusing, but a weird concept.

Fox

Lethal Weapon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXZdEmvcFdU (Airing Wednesday 8:00) Another reboot of some action movie. Yipee.

ABP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsbVnrOkcr8 (Airing Midseason) Can someone tell me what APB stands for? Oh, hey Linda from Under The Dome…I’ve missed you but not enough to watch this show.

Star https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2snL9QUIZI (Airing Midseason) It’s clear this is from the same people who’re behind Empire. I love music and all, but this seems like more drama than singing. I’ve never seen Dreamgirls but I feel like this is Dreamgirls.

Shots Fired https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RmkAihHeJg (Airing Midseason) It’s called Shots Fired due to the fact that it’s about a literal shot fired from a gun, but the beauty of this title is that it also works as a callout to society. Boom. I mean, will this show solve all of these very relevant problems? No. But it’s good to raise awareness while entertaining. I won’t be watching, but nevertheless.

The Exorcist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NH3ffAp9aA (Airing Friday 9:00) This is an easy pass. That being said, this trailer wasn’t even scary at all. Come on, Fox. Ya gotta commit.

The Pitch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0wLCGwYZ3g (Airing Thursday 9:00) This is kind of cool. My brother, the baseball know-it-all, says it’s very unrealistic and even though there is one female from France who is a contender to one day perhaps play in the MLB, the show should not be advertising itself as “true story on the verge of happening”. If I had an interest in baseball, I’d be all over this, but I am not, so I will support this show from a distance. I mean, Girl Power and all that, but this show isn’t my style.

Making History https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-TVyOqCkr0 (Airing Midseason) Time Travel show #3, and while I’m pretty sure I won’t be watching this, I have to say, I actually laughed out loud twice while watching this trailer. So it has potential, but I just think compared to the other Time Travel shows out there, it’s lacking.

Prison Break https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9T-9fZn_oA (Airing Midseason) Obviously, this is a reboot/sequel of the old Prison Break show (which I did not watch so therefore won’t watch this). Besides, I get my fill of these two in various DC shows.

The Mick https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ6Jg5i_pqc (Airing Midseason) It’s clear that this is from the same people the brought us It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia because this is literally Dee in a different setting. This looks silly. I’d say that it’s probably better suited for a movie, but I wouldn’t even watch it then.

Son Of Zorn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPnlQTi8heM (Airing Sunday 8:30) What is this? Literally, what is this? Who greenlit this? Why is this in existence? Like dang, I think I’d rather watch Downward Dog.

CW

Frequency https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUA-NT4ZzRg (Airing Wednesday 9:00) Time Travel show #4. Kind of interesting and has potential, but I don’t think I’ll watch. The thing with this show is that it seems to want to solve this mystery and I feel like the answer will either a) be really complicated and science-y, b) be really lame or c) never come because the show will get cancelled first.

No Tomorrow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHomgpe_HYE (Airing Tuesday 9:00) My problem with this show is that it’s plot revolves around something happening in 8 months, so let’s say Season 1 is spread out over those 8 months, then what? Either the world ends and thusly the show too, or the world doesn’t end and there’s nothing to show in Season 2. The premise isn’t bad, but I’m just not sold. Also, can I just comment on how racially diverse that group of friends is. Wow.

Riverdale http://www.spoilersguide.com/riverdale/the-cw-first-look-trailer/ (Airing Midseason) The reason the above link is different it’s because the trailer was leaked and then deleted, so this is all we have for now, but I’ll update this post when a good quality video is out. So this show is the one I’ve been looking forward to the most. I’m a huge Archie comic fan, but from this trailer, you can hardly tell that it’s an adaptation of the feel-good family friendly comic series. Honestly, if I didn’t know it was an adaptation of that, I would not be watching this show. Looks too dark and dramatic for me. But it’s Archie so I’m definitely giving it a shot. I’m a little disheartened after seeing this trailer but I’m still very excited.

If you’re interested, there are also a few trailers for TNT and TBS, but no one cares about those channels and the shows aren’t that exciting so I didn’t bother putting them here. But fellow blogger Emily shared them here if you’re really interested.

I know I may seem harsh in my trailer critiques, and I think it’s me subconsciously forcing myself to dislike a show so I won’t watch it and ruin my life. But to be fair, there are a lot of shows here that are kind of lame. To each their own and all that, so I do hope some shows here interest you. Let me know which ones you plan on catching!

That’s all for now!

  1. I remember MacGyver as a T.V. series. Not sure it was ever a movie.
    APB is “all points bulletin”.
Great overview. It will come in handy as a reference for all the new shows being promoted during commercial times. There are so many that they often just blend together.

  2. That whole forcing yourself to dislike a show – I did that with Grimm. I forced myself to underrate it, was suckered in by the juxtaposition of silliness and surprisingly good character/plot, and then they took it to a whole other level of no. There’s bad because the budget isn’t great and/or the whole show’s concept is ludicrous to begin with, but to go from writing storylines and characters that improved per season to just taking an axe to them because “plot progression” made my blood boil.

It’s like having a relative you never knew you had, developing a great relationship with them, only for them to be a serial killer and you’re the next in line.

    • I feel like humans do it more often than we realise, and when we do realise it, there’s some logic behind it. I don’t necessarily feel bad for forcing myself to dislike a show because I know I can’t love them all, even if I could watch them all. I make an educated call. The fact is, I’m honest. You are too.
